The opportunity is for the prescribing process to be automated for both the prescriber and pharmacist. With the prescription information transmitted from the prescriber electronically into the pharmacy system, the pharmacist will automatically have the prescription information available without re-keying in a standard format. More complete information available to the prescriber making it much less likely that the pharmacist will need to call the provider back to clarify or verify information.

E-prescribing enables physicians and pharmacists to communicate prescription information with each other electronically, replacing time-consuming phone calls and faxes that can take several hours per day.

Pharmacists can send renewal requests to physicians electronically, and physicians and their staff can review and transmit their responses back to the pharmacy's computer with limited manual intervention.
